FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

How is the compost sampled?

The sampling process simply involves you placing  a small sample (a few ounces) of your compost into a clean sample container.  The sample should then be frozen and shipped cold to our lab.  See our Guide to Sampling.

What kind of information are you going to be able to give me about my compost?

We give you an assessment of:

  • The amount of living organisms in your product (it’s more than you think!)
  • The variety of organisms
    • Bacteria - the greatest amount of variety, and the heavy lifters in the composting process
    • Archea - a lot like bacteria, but not!
    • Fungi - we really like fungi!
    • Protozoa, nematodes, earthworms. Etc.
  • How do these microbes work together, their ratios, etc
    • Bacteria:fungi ratio is a common metric for producers and growers alike
  • Specific species of interest
    • You give us what you are interested in and we can find out if it is there.
